So, I'm sure you're already aware of this, but these pictures are totally fake. I'm not a wood nymph, I don't live in a forest, and therefore I don't change my clothes in one. (And there were plenty of mosquitos lurking while I was taking these pictures back in May.)

Ok, so I don't know when it happened, but somewhere along the line I guess I decided that I was going to stop taking pictures of "outfits" and just start pretending I'm an artist. Whatever, it's not like I ever keep my promises about how I'm going to be so good with updating my blog, so I guess I don't need to make promises about the kind of blog it is. Ya dig?

Finally, thank you so much to all the people that voted for me in Stuck at Prom. I came in 5th place out of 300+ couples, so although I was disappointed that I didn't win one of the major prizes, I'm still very pleased with the results. So, thank you for the part you played in helping me get there!

Stuck at Prom

Okay, now let me explain. When I was a junior in high school, I went to a college meeting in which they mentioned that among all the crazy scholarships out there, there was one that involved making a prom dress out of duct tape and wearing it to prom. I thought this sounded awesome, but when I tried to check it out in November of this year, I thought I was too late to register. However, in April, I decided to check it out again and found out I was just in time! I immediately sought out a partner and got to work on my dress. My friend Luke stepped up to the plate and was very obliging throughout the entire process. We used 27 rolls of colored duct tape during 130 hours of intense work. It was frustrating, fun, and one of the most unusual experiences of my life. We wore it to prom and won a lot of attention. Everyone wanted to touch it and Luke could attest to the fact that it was a very sweaty experience.
Today we were informed that we were picked as one of the top 10 entries, giving us a chance at the $5000 scholarship prize. In order to win, we need your votes, the votes of your friends, your family and your co-workers, and if you have any pets with an email address, we need their votes too. Should we win, I will receive $5000, Luke will receive $5000, and our high school will receive $5000. 100% of this money is going toward education.

Frolicking.

You have no idea how difficult it is to capture the word "frolic" in an image. Unless you've tried, that is. I had hundreds of terrible pictures of me in the air with my hair flailing around wildly. These were just the least emabarrassing ones. (The second last one is my favorite.)
In related news, have a ton of other pictures of myself in this same dress, but in different locations, so I didn't want to put them in this set. They'll be coming up soon.

I don't think I've worn a playsuit since I was 6 years old. But honest to goodness, this is the best thing I've ever worn! I've been wanting a romper for the longest time, and I found this adorable, nautical one the other day at my favorite place on earth: Value Village. And considering its patriotic makeup, and the holiday weekend, and my shameless penchant for wearing cheesy, themed clothing, it seemed like it was meant to be.

If I look like a monkey in these, that's because I am one.
Well, not literally, but I was so excited about my freedom of movement in a garment that could easily be mistaken for a dress, that I needed to take advantage of it. And if there's one thing that requires movement, it's climbing a tree. And when this apple tree is in blossom, it's like heaven under there. With the breeze making the petals float all around and the lovely warm weather, there wasn't anywhere else I'd rather be playing. In my playsuit. Ha.

When I took these photos, it was one of those days that was just not a "I really want you to see my face" day. Did you get that impression when you looked at these pictures? I thought you might.When I was younger, I watched a movie called The Watcher in the Woods. I don't even remember what it was about, but I know that ever since I've been a little bit scared of forests that are completely comprised of pine trees. I don't know if you've ever been in a pine forest, but it's as though you're stepping into an entirely different world. It's very quiet and soft and rather eerie. There's a solid floor of needles and a ceiling of branches above that lets in very little light. These trees that are planted in rows makes it seem even more as if you're in the palace corridor of some mysterious fairy queen.

If these pictures look similar to the last set, that's because they are. They were taken on the same day in a spot very close to the other one. I tend to shoot my outfits in a very posed manner, and I didn't feel finished with this one, so I just changed it up a bit and kept going.
The sun kept surprising me with its presence, so some of the pictures are a lot brighter than the others. I like how that gives them a different feel.

I've been watching quite a few versions of Jane Eyre recently, as I was inspired by the release of the new movie. It's lovely, by the way.
While I was out in the woods taking these pictures, I felt a little Jane Eyre-esque. Bit of a cloudy day, bit of a gothic setting. I'm not saying I want to run into anyone's crazy wife, but I wouldn't mind meeting a Mr. Rochester.

I love David Tennant with most of my heart. Some of it is saved for people I actually know, but most of it belongs to him.

His birthday was on Monday, and as I was surfing the web I stumbled across this lovely video. No one really talks, but the story comes through beatifully.

I absolutely love the pattern on this skirt. It makes me want to pretend that I come from royalty and have sheilds hanging on my walls next to my 400 year old tapestries. I don't know if you can tell in the picture, but inside the sheild shapes are little golden lions. I wish I had a brooch with a similar pattern; that would really complete the ensemble if you ask me.

I have a question regarding formatting. How can I find a way to add a song to my post, not the whole blog, without posting a video from youtube? I've seen plenty of bloggers with neat, little, rectangular song players, and I'm completely jealous. I don't even know what to call them, but I want one.

Be forewarned: this post is not about great choices in fashion. It's about a passion for music.

Hey guys, guess what! I'm in a band! Feast of Stephen.
Granted, we're a fake band and we're completely horrible, but I feel like I'm getting a classic high school experience that I otherwise wouldn't be able to.

We released our first, self-titled album in December; it was filled with heart-warming (but painful to the ears) Christmas carols. We sold it for one dollar or the exchange of a blank cd. There was even an article about us in the school newspaper.

And now, I'm so thrilled to be announcing this, Tuesday, January 25th is when our Latina album officially drops! Tracks include Hips Don't Lie by Shakira, Livin' La Vida Loca, and Levantando Las Manos by El Simbolo. (We can't charge anything this time around, because these songs all fall under copyright laws. It's a bummer.)

But we've got 102 fans on facebook and a youtube account you can check out if you're feeling like your ears haven't bled sufficiently in a while.

P.S. I would just like to note that the reason so many of these pictures are in black and white is because I think it makes us look professional. Which is the exact opposite of what we actually are.

This is what has been holding me hostage lately.

I've got one more week of shows and then hopefully a short break before the next one starts up.

I know our small town low-budget high school theater department isn't very high class, and I've gone through a lot of stress with ideas of thinking we weren't good enough or that our show is bad, but I've changed my mind. We've had a good time with this one and I think we pulled it together just in time.

(Let's not get into the fact that none of these people know I have a blog. Don't tell them. Shhh.)

Hello Ladies, Gentlemen, and all other readers of this blog.

Nice to meet you. I’m Mikayla, a very dear friend of Hannah’s. I begged her pretty please to let me hijack her blog for a day (or a post, if you wish) so I can ask some fashion advice.

Here’s the story:
I’m currently living in Belgium as an exchange student. On October 9th, my host brother, Arnaud, and I are going to a soirée (fancy dinner party) in Brussels. I have to get all dressed up and formal for it (think prom, pretty much…), and I need advice on what to wear. By the way, the theme is “Pop Art” à la Andy Warhol.

I already have a dress, pictured below. It’s navy blue and halter, as you can see, and it comes down to just past my knees. I love the skirt because it’s flowy and spinny and I just love love love skirts like that. I get it from my mother. Anyway, I think it’s a very pretty dress, but I do have a few concerns about it…

1) It comes down past my knees. I find this to be a difficult length to wear. I like that it’s not too short, but not overly long, however my problem is that I think it makes my legs look stumpy. Do you agree? Do you have any suggestions on ways to avoid that effect? What do you do when you wear skirts this length?

2) It’s navy blue. Don’t get me wrong, navy blue is one of my favorite colors, and I would have no problem with it if I could wear just the dress. However, I have to wear shoes (obviously) and a shrug to cover up my tattoo (you can see it in the pictures; I don’t have the shrug yet). My host mom bought me black shoes and is loaning me the black shrug. I’ve always kind of thought that black and navy are a big no-no. Is that the case? Should I worry about it, or should I just live with it? It’s only one night, after all.

3) Jewelry. Since the dress has rhinestones on the front, I was going to stick with silver jewelry. I’m thinking a silver braided bracelet that my grandmother gave me and silver earrings. I was going to stay away from a necklace because I think it’ll be too much with the halter and whatnot. But do you think I should wear one? Why or why not? It's amusing to me that as I look through these pictures I noticed an unusual thought process, or rather lack of one. The only thing in my head during the course of this photo-taking session must have been, "I really don't want anyone to see the front of my dress." I'm turned around, hiding behind a tree, snuggling in my big wool sweater...

Thanks for all the well-wishes on the play. Rehearsals are already in full swing, and I think it's going to turn out as a good show. It's very mysterious, and I hope that if I do it well, my character will add to that. She's Edgar Allan Poe's love interest in the show and she's taken from the poem Annabel Lee. She's also loosely based off of the Poe Toaster-
Every year on Poe's birthday, a mysterious figure appears at his grave and leaves three roses and a bottle of cognac on his grave. It's happened every year without fail, until this year.

So last time I mentioned my feeling of "go school!" and I'd just like to say that is completely gone now. I'm done. It's mainly for this reason that I haven't been commenting back to all of your nice remarks. I think that's going to be my focus for the weekends from now on.

But on a happier, yet still school-related note, I just got what I think is the female lead in the play. The show we're doing is called Nevermore! Edgar Allan Poe, The Final Mystery, and I admit I don't know much about it. My character is a mystery to me, but I know I've got the first line, so there's that. I'm rather excited.

I do this thing where I find a new song that I really like, then I listen to it on repeat until I kill it. My two songs of the moment are as follows:

The good camera still happens to be M.I.A. This post is really more about trying to wrap myself up in my cardigan than stellar photography. Fall seems to have hit hard today. It's freezing!

But that seems okay for the moment. I'm still relishing the beginning of school, and I haven't gotten to the "I hate this" phase quite yet. I'm still more on the "I love learning" train of thought and that is cool with me. Pile on the Word Power and European History. I got this.

I wanted to do a post today to see out the end of my relative freedom, but the camera seems to be missing! Using the rather taboo webcam seemed my only option. I hoped that making my products black and white kind of classed them up a little bit.

My birthday was yesterday, and I spent quite a bit of it strolling around the Minneapolis Institute of the Arts. There's something very special about art museums. I love that you can get lost in them, and seem to pass by the same room several times but always end up in a new place that you hadn't seen before. It's cheesy, but nothing bad ever happens in a museum. Nothing ever happens. Delicate pieces of art from 1000 BC are on display. It's like inside a museum, time stops. That's kind of an ironic way to spend a birthday, isn't it?

But anyway, the point of it is, I love them.

It's the idea of this kind of outfit that I love. The thought of just cutting down to the very basics is so attractive to me, in theory at least. I just think that the idea of frolicking about in a dress is reminiscent of fairy tale heroines and so on and so forth. The actual wearing of dresses sometimes isn't as peachy as I'd like it to be. Then again, I don't generally do a lot of frolicking, so maybe that's my problem.

Ahh, look at me, quoting famous pieces of art. I like to think it makes me look cultured. My mother is an art professor, so I guess I can claim to have some knowledge of the real thing, other than just thinking of Colin Firth as the true Vermeer.

And as you can see in the last picture, I have this wierd habit of curling curling my toes. Why am I not wearing shoes, you may ask? Well, during the summer I think having bare feet is just as much of a fashion choice as wearing footwear. I like to frolic around town in my bare feet often enough that I think it can legitimately be considered part of my outfit.

These shorts are probably one of my favorite finds. Maybe they're more common than I thought, but I've seen a similar pair on some of my favorite bloggers and when I found them on the rack at the thrift store I think I squealed a little bit. I'm thinking of replacing the buttons with some bigger white ones that won't blend in so much with the fabric.

And do you like the awesome tan lines on my feet? It's from all the time I've been spending in tennis shoes at my all day theatre camp.

So I don't think I'm really out of my musical funk yet, but I have one of those cheesy compilation cds of songs from the sixties, and this is my favorite. I hadn't heard of this band before, but I'm going to have to change that.

The whole time we were taking these pictures my mom was telling me that it was getting too dark out, and we were trying to dodge each other's shadows. But overall I think they turned out pretty well.

I've been in kind of a musical funk lately, so I've been trying to get back into my love of British boy bands from the 60s. And although I'm not a huge Kinks fan, I think this is the best version there is of this song. It's rockin'.

Dress: Thrifted $3...Imitation Keds: Payless $5

I wear this dress so much. It's so cool and breezy and colorful, and I love it. In addition, it's part of what I used for my prom dress. When I cut the bottom off to shorten it, my mother sewed it onto the bottom of my prom dress as a ruffle. And I wore the belt with it as well.

And clearly, I'm kind of obsessed with sneakers and skirts. I can't help it. They're just so functional.

These days I'm spending all day at a theatre camp for kids as an "intern." I'm basically taking the class with them, but as a good role model and semi-baby sitter. And we have a t-shirt that we're required to wear, as well as the "no skirts" rule. So though I've worn this outfit many times in the past, today it was kind of a lie. (I did wear it to go shopping with the mama.) Similar to the cardigan in the last photo. It was about 85 degrees outside; there's no way I kept a sweater on.

Unfortunately, the sun really washed out my shirt in these pictures. You can't see the little ruffle along the neckline. And that's probably my favorite part.

No, I lie. My favorite part is the cloud print on my skirt. It's so playful and fun. That's another reason I like wearing sneakers with skirts. I think it tones down the girliness a bit.

This skirt is also a perfect example of my favorite way to spend my time. Thrift a frumpy old skirt that reaches the ground, chop it, hem it, and voila! It's new and fun. Seriously, I love sifting through racks at Value Village and coming up with stuff like this.

I love these guys. Really, I do. My mom always teases me that this would be a wall of my "old British men" but good ol' Bob saves me from that. Now it's just a wall of old men. (Whom I love.)The poster on the left that got cut off is my dearest Sherlock Holmes, played brilliantly by Mr. Jeremy Brett. It's a great picture, so someday it will have to be included in a different post.

On a different note, this skirt has pockets. And boy do I love me some pockets.

For the longest time, I had nothing good to say about girls wearing leggings. My only remark centered on the phrase "You're not wearing pants." I have since changed my tune. I quite enjoy not wearing pants.

And even though it was sunny earlier this morning, there was no reason for me to be wearing these sunglasses in these pictures. I just like them.

My family has the messiest attic you have ever seen. We just started cleaning it out, and going through years of family history. My grandma was telling us stories about a pair of old socks that came with her great grandfather over from Bavaria. The man was stylin', let me tell you.

I really like the color of this dress. It's a little blue-er than the classic sea-foam green, but it's close enough. Sea-foam green is rapidly becoming one of my favorite colors.

I like that picture of my wierd facial expression. It sums up my personality quite nicely I think.

This is a song that I've had stuck in my head for a while now. It's from one of those British tv shows that I love. It's catchy.

Willows are one of my favorite kinds of trees. When I was little, I would come outside and talk to this one, like it was Grandmother Willow from Pocahontas. And before I got too big, I would swing from the branches, like I'm pretending to do in the first two pictures. Now they just crack when I hang from them.

Just because it's customary, I should probably address the looong break I took from my very new blog. There's only one explanation: school. But tomorrow's the last day, and Wednesday is my last exam. I'm thrilled to say the least.

I'm trying to figure out a good spot for taking photos around my house. I'd like to get myself a regular spot, but one that's actually nice. This stone wall is the wall of a courtyard next to a church across the street from my house. The problem with this one is that there are a fairly large number of people who passed by here in the five minutes I was taking pictures.
One stopped to ask if the fish fry was tonight. It wasn't.

This was actually from the first day of my trip. But this is the last set of pictures taken outside Wisconsin.

We went to this place called Elephant Rocks, which is where the pictures by the super-blue water come from. There were all these large, bulbous rocks that reminded me of a set from a Jim Henson movie. It looked like a scene right out of the Dark Crystal. (If you haven't seen it, I reccommend it for a night when you're craving some good Muppet action.)

Look at that kid in all red in the background. He was creeping about and looking at me like I was from Mars while my mom was taking pictures of me. I guess he thought that we were taking too many pictures of just one person. He obviously doesn't grasp the concept of blogging.

So, I know I don't really list where the clothes I'm wearing came from. To be honest, my wardrobe is filled mostly from leftovers from the time in my life when I shopped primarily at Kohls. Some nice thrift is creeping in there now too, though. So when I have things to be more specific about, I'll be sure to make them known.

Spring Beauties

Ah, the travel pictures continue. This is one of the nights we camped, and our entire site was filled with small flowers called Spring Beauties. What a fitting name.

Besides the sweet, small foliage, there was this bizarre tree. My dad says it grew that way because of snow, but I'm thinking it must just have a funky side it wanted to let out.

I must say, it served as a wonderful bench, although the pain in my tailbone as I attempted to hop off might disagree.

I don't consider this outfit to be one of my all-time masterpieces, but I'd just picked this jumper up in a thrift store earlier that day, and there was this wonderful tree as a photo opportunity...

How could I resist just throwing it on?

And look who came to visit! There were 9 deer on that hillside. Nine! And they wandered up to our campsite while we sat around the fire, tame and nice as pie.

Ok, I have a quick confession. I have absolutely no idea how I'm supposed to respond to the incredibly nice comments I've gotten. What's the blogger-etiquette for a situation like this?
I think I've decided that I'll go to everyone's blog and leave a comment on one of their posts.
But is that how to respond to someone's question?
My months of lurking haven't provided me with this knowledge, so I'd love some advice.

My parents and I decided awhile back that we'd use it to go on a trip, and after 5 days, we're back home from our adventures.
I was so proud of my limited and versatile packing, until I realized I'd forgotten more than I'd put in my suitcase.

It was lovely seeing that spring is so much further along in Missouri than it is in Wisconsin. Sun, flowers, the lot of it.

This dress is currently one of my favorite thrift store finds. I love the floral embroidery on the collar. When I saw it hanging on the rack, it was one of those long, oversized denim dresses that seemed as if they never should have been designed. But with a belt and a shorter hem (just a tad too short. I intend to fix it), it grew on me.

I wish I could have worn more interesting footwear, but with all the hiking and camping, I basically lived in my Keds the entire trip. I promise you're not missing out on anything even though my feet are cut out of most of the pictures.

Hello Blog world.

I'm Hannah.

Meeting new people is usually kind of an akward thing, and starting a blog feels the same way right now. I'm one of those people that has been lurking around in the blogosphere for quite awhile, and now I've decided to get out there and shake some hands.

I've loved playing dress up ever since I was a little kid, and I've had some of my best times rifling through clothing racks in thrift stores. Fashion in one sense or another has always been fun to me.

I love reading, and I'm one of those people that writes for fun in their spare time. Besides that, I'm a fan a the theatre, so all in all, literature could be my middle name. Clothes have to create quirky, diverse characters, just like those found in the pages of books or on the stage; hence, my decision on the blog title, A Real Character.

And I'd hope to think it's true.

I'm a real character, alright.
